University Hospital Vall d´Hebron

Our group is a multidisciplinary team that integrates clinical microbiologist, basic biologist and infectious diseases consultants. The group is incorporated in the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute, the research foundation of the Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron of Barcelona, Spain. The main research lines are: 1) microbial pathogenesis and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, 2) bacterial, fungal and viral infections in the critical ill and immunosupressed patients (cancer and pediatric or adult transplant patients), 3) hospital-acquired infections, including epidemiology, risk factors and therapy of multidrug-resistant organisms, catheter-related sepsis, orthopedic infections and Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea, and 4) infective endocarditis, specifically caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The main contribution of the group, among others, have been the description of new resistance mechanisms in Enterobacteriaceae, the demonstration of the effectiveness of a new antimicrobial combination for the treatment of Enterococcus faecalis infective endocarditis, the epidemiology of invasive infections caused by Aspergillus in solid organ transplant patients, and the effectiveness of influenza vaccination in pediatric organ solid transplant patients. The different lines of research are founded by clinical trials, competitive projects ant the industry. The area generates more than 50 publications per year, with an average impact factor of more than 4 points.
